About the Faculty Schools & Departments School of Fundamental Science and Engineering (Departments) School of Creative Science and Engineering (Departments) School of Advanced Science and Engineering (Departments) Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems Graduate School of Environment and Energy Engineering School of Creative Science and Engineering (Departments)  Undergraduate Schools Graduate Schools and Departments Undergraduate Schools Admission Policy In line with Waseda University’s founding principle, “the preservation of the independence of scholarship,” the School of Creative Science and Engineering welcomes applications from individuals from Japan and overseas who possess a solid grounding in basic scholarship, a powerful intellectual curiosity, an enterprising spirit in line with the university’s principles, and a strong motivation to pursue further study. When selecting applicants, the school places particular importance (among other things) on whether or not the applicant possesses the following: outstanding abilities in the natural sciences, sufficient command of English to study the various fields covered in that language, sufficient logical thinking ability, and the ability to play a leading role in future society, drawing on global insights, and a comprehensive grounding in the liberal arts. Curriculum Policy The curriculum provided by the school is of an international standard. It allocates courses for each academic year in an effective manner. These courses include general engineering courses (which focus on mathematics, physics, and basic experimentation), specialized courses (which feature an organic combination of theory and practice), and language courses (which enable students to gain proficiency in English or in Japanese). For students in the early university years, the school has established a fieldwork-based school-wide SHIP course, which focuses on the themes of energy, environment, disasters, human society, and design. The SHIP course is designed to help students master broad knowledge and perspectives concerning the two majors of the school, while also helping them to determine which specialized courses they will take in subsequent years. In the fourth year, the curriculum culminates in the final research project, undertaken in a laboratory and related to the specialized courses that formed part their major. In this way, the school aims to foster future members of society who have mastered specialized knowledge and who are equipped with international perspectives, engineering ethics, adequate communication skills, and the ability to play a leading role in future society. Diploma Policy Utilizing the originality of Waseda University, the School of Creative Science and Engineering facilitates diverse exchanges in scholarship, culture, language and values, across the university-wide educational environment. In this way, the program fosters future members of society who will be able to contribute proactively to the global community. We are currently facing considerable global problems such as population increase, food and water shortages, diminishing natural resources and energy sources. Global warming and associated natural disasters are also becoming increasingly serious. There are various social issues as well, including the aging society, regional disparities in the provision of advanced medical services, decaying social infrastructure, and the resulting decline in safety. The school thus aims to equip students with an understanding of such problems that will enable them to develop practical solutions based on scientific and technological perspectives, thereby creating a future with a wealth of possibilities. Specifically, the School consists of two majors: Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE). In ME, students not only focus on mechanical engineering but also explore its connections with architectural and management engineering. In CE, students tackle a range of issues from a global perspective – including environmental preservation, improving living environments, and ensuring the safety of human society – and apply an engineering perspective to such issues. Curriculum  Handbooks  Syllabus ╢ Graduate Schools and Departments Policies concerning the admission of students (Admission Policy) Under its educational principle of the “Independence of Scholarship,” Waseda University would like to welcome many students, from both Japan and abroad, who have reached a certain level of basic academic skills and have a great deal of intellectual curiosity, that are filled with the Waseda spirit of enterprise and are highly motivated for learning. In the master’s program, students are required to have basic abilities related to architecture, general mechanical engineering, management systems engineering, management design, construction engineering, and earth and environmental resources science and engineering, as well as basic knowledge to learn in depth and from a broad perspective at the same time in a specialized field. In the doctoral course, students are required to have the abilities necessary to obtain the above-mentioned master’s degree and to possess a high level of expertise, experience, theory, and motivation to solve various problems of modern society from the perspective of science and technology and to contribute to the creation of a truly affluent society. Policy concerning the composition and implementation of educational curriculums (Curriculum Policy) The prime educational and research principle of the Graduate School is to provide practical education and carry out pioneering research on technology related to systems for the creation and circulation of spaces, equipment, communities, etc. and social technology systems. In more specific terms, the Graduate School offers to Master’s students the Provisionary Graduate Enrollment Program and also allows them to enroll in basic subjects offered by undergraduate schools specializing in other fields of specialization, while at the same time providing an inter-disciplinary unit system and special courses, including the Urban Planning Course and Macro Materials Course (Master’s), Advanced Architectural Practical Exercise Course (Master’s/Doctoral), Systematic Robotics Course (Doctoral) and Management Technology Leadership Course (Master’s/Doctoral), to help them to develop a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills beyond the boundaries of different research categories, areas of specialty and departments. This unit system and its courses are designed to allow students to understand the latest conditions of their own research areas early on, acquire basic knowledge and skills in other areas, and receive systematic education that is organically related to their own studies beyond their areas of specialty. Policy concerning the certification of graduation and conferment of degree (Diploma Policy) The goal is to promote diverse exchanges in academic studies, culture, languages and values through providing systematic educational curriculums, as well as university-wide educational and student life environments, by taking advantage of the comprehensiveness and innovativeness of Waseda University, thereby developing human resources that can make proactive contributions to the global community. One of the foundational principles of Waseda University is “Practical Application of Scholarship.” This clearly indicates how much importance the University places on applying basic scholarship to contribute to society, rather than just developing basic scholastic skills to establish academic foundations. The word “creative” refers not only to the act of breaking things down to analyze them and discover laws in them but also to proposing comprehensive solutions to a wide range of issues facing society. The Graduate School of Creative Science and Engineering implements research and education on advanced and specialized scholastic theories and applications and explores them at the deepest level to develop human resources who can produce abundance as seen from the viewpoint of the many different values of many different people, contribute to the creation and evolution of culture and well being of human beings and support human activities from a worldwide point of view.  Policies of Departments Schools and Departments Master’s program Graduate Schools Departments Master’s program English-based Graduate Program Japanese-based Graduate Program April Admission September Admission April Admission September Admission Creative Science and Engineering Department of Architecture ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Modern Mechanical Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering × × ◯ ◯ Department of Business Design & Management × × ◯ ◯ Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Earth Sciences, Resources and Environmental Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Doctoral program Graduate Schools Departments Doctoral program English-based Graduate Program Japanese-based Graduate Program April Admission September Admission April Admission September Admission Creative Science and Engineering Department of Architecture ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Modern Mechanical Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Business Design & Management ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ Department of Earth Sciences, Resources and Environmental Engineering ◯ ◯ ◯ ◯ *Graduate Program for Embodiment Informatics Waseda University Program for Leading Graduate Schools Curriculum  Handbooks ╢  Syllabus ╢ Page Top  Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University JapaneseEnglish www.waseda.jp/fsci About the FacultyAdmissions for Graduate SchoolsAdmissions for Undergraduate SchoolsFor Current StudentsFor ResearchersFor Alumni ContactVisiting InformationSite Map Other sites School of Fundamental Science and Engineering ╢Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering ╢School of Creative Science and Engineering ╢Graduate School of Creative Science and Engineering ╢School of Advanced Science and Engineering ╢Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering ╢Graduate School of Information, Production and SystemsGraduate School of Environment and Energy EngineeringTWIns ╢ Sorry!
